The good thing about writing about an old project is that it allows you to distance yourself from emotional involvement and see more clearly the actual project’s actual value. I selected this dear book as the editorial representative in my portfolio because I thought it ripened well.
The material we had in hand was 80 photographs in square format, picturing a black and white Rio de Janeiro’s architectural masterpieces as well as your beautiful nature. The demand came from the photographer inviting us to dialogue with his work and produce an authorial art book.
Rio is a city vibrant in colors, curves, and stunning views that mixes its beautiful nature with historical constructions. To play with the landscapes imprisoned in squares, our response was to give freedom back to the city and propose new combinations of its elements. The pages have a vertical decrease in the middle that, combined with the bounded on the opposite side of their folds, allows the reader to connect the photos and produce their own dialogues, breaking up the squares and rearranging the layout at every fold. The result was a visual labyrinth with no right answer!
